ANNULARLY CORRUGATED HOSES

h-03

During the fabrication of our annular or parallel convoluted hoses, a thin walled longitudinal welded pipe is produced, which is then hydraulically formed into the required shape.

Our standard program of annularly corrugated hoses:

  • PARMECA®
  • PARNOR®
  • PARRAP®
  • HP/THP/XHP

STRIP WOUND METAL HOSES

h-04

During the manufacturing of our stripwound hoses, a stainless steel strip is profiled and rolled over a rotating center. After forming the cylindrical cross sections, the seams are crimped. Our stripwound hoses are robust and flexible, and their construction allows various movements (also in axial direction).

Stripwound hoses are always of limited tightness and are not recommended for conveying liquids and gases. These hoses are typically used for:

  • mechanical protection
  • bend radius limitors for our pressure hoses
  • protection of cable and wiring systems (also for EMC shielding)
  • exhaust gas extraction
  • ventilation and aspiration hoses
  • smooth inliners in corrugated pressure hoses

Our standard program of strip wound metal hoses:

  • VS
  • DE
  • C150
  • PROTEX

HOSE ASSEMBLIES

h-05

A hose assembly consists of a metal hose, with or without braid, with fittings, designed, manufactured and tested, either from our standard program or made to your specific requirements and ready for use.

We can design and manufacture almost any kind of hose massembly, either with standard connection parts or with customer specific fittings.

VIBRATION ABSORBER

h-06

Three problems have to be considered if vibrations or sounds in a piping system shall be isolated and eliminated:

  • the source of vibration
  • the transfer onto the solid body
  • the propagation into the piping system

The vibration source (engines, compressors, pumps etc.) shall be solidly installed and smoothly run. To connect a rigid piping to a vibrating engine part, elastic metal vibration absorbers are suitable, made of a flexible metal bellows and sturdy fittings. The right choice depends on the operating conditions such as pressure, vibration frequency and temperature.

HOSES FOR WATER APPLICATIONS

h-07

MARINE HOSES

(FreeFlex – Submarine)

h-16

We combine marine hose experience with the lessons and technology gained through designing  and manufacturing collapsible and kinkable long length hose for military and offshore oil applications. The basic carcass of the FreeFlex hose, like the “Triton” hose before it, is reinforced with steel wire cord. The rigid body wire (“helix”) that is conventionally used in marine hose is replaced with a special hard rubber compound over-wrapped with additional layers of wire cord. This enables the hose to fully recover from collapse or kink without damage. Additionally, we considered special requirements from major petroleum companies. Our FreeFlex Hose is certified by RTD (Rontgen TechnischeDienstb.v.) and ABS (American Bureau of Shipping). Like our other marine hose product lines, we add textile reinforcement over the wire cord plies of the basic hose to build the H5006 reinforced hose and the VRSH and SRSH SALM-type hoses. OurFreeFlex Hose is available in 6”, 8”, 10”, 12”, 16”, 20” and 24” nominal inside diameters. As its name indicates, ourFreeFlex hose does not have a helical, steel body wire like conventional oil suction and discharge hose. The whole carcass is free to flex as necessary to react the extreme loads that are often applied to marine hose during handling or service. The basic carcass of the FreeFlex hose consists of the tube, breaker, cover, and wire cord reinforcing layers that have proven themselves in our conventional marine hoses. Above the wire plies, in place of the rigid steel helix, are layers of hard rubber overwrapped with additional wire plies. This design enables the hard rubber and wire reinforcing plies to work together when the hose is stressed. Under kink or collapse loads, the layers flatten and rebound together. The loads do not deform a rigid, steel body wire which would, in turn, permanently damage the hose carcass. Instead the carcass is able to kink or collapse and then fully recover its original shape without damage or permanent deformation. The FreeFlex design also accommodates extreme tension loads better than conventional marine hose. When a conventional hose elongates, the underlying plies pull down and away from the rubber around the rigid helix. Under high elongation, this can cause delamination between the layers. When a tensile load is applied to the FreeFlex, all the layers elongate and neck down together then rebound uniformly when the load is removed. Our FreeFlex Hose offers many technical advantages over standard marinehose.

    • Full Recovery from Collapse or Kink
    • Smaller Allowable Bending Radius
    • Higher Allowable Tensile Load
    • Higher Allowable Elongation
    • Higher Fatigue Resistance These technical advantages yield operational advantages over standard marine hose.
    • FreeFlex is not Damaged by Accidental Kink or Collapse
    • FreeFlex is Less Likely to be Damaged by improper Handling
    • FreeFlex is More Durable under Severe Sea Conditions

EXPANSION JOINTS

h-57
h-58

According to their physical properties, most metals expand with increasing temperatures and contract with decreasing temperatures. In pipeline systems, this phenomenon causes a variation in the length of the individual sections of the pipeline. As pipelines are normally anchored at least on two connection points, any variation in length will result in thermal strain in the material and enhanced forces and moments at these terminal points. As far as possible, one will utilize the inherent flexibility of a pipeline to compensate the pipe expansion (natural compensation). Should the expansion, however, exceed the inherent flexibility of the pipe, expansion joints are necessary to compensate these movements. Additionally, mechanical vibrations of pumps, compressors, turbines and motors should be dampened to avoid any damage to adjoining pipelines, their supports or any installed instruments. Forces and moments on nozzles of compressors, turbines, vessels and other plant components are limited and must not be exceeded. In all these cases, expansion joints can be utilized. The central component of each expansion joint is the metal bellows (*) that, due to its shape and thin wall, acts like a spring. The bellows however has to meet the following basic criteria to qualify for its use as an expansion element. It must

  • withstand the operating and test conditions (pressure, temperature) of the pipe system,
  • ensure corrosion resistance against internal (flow) and external (atmospheric) conditions,
  • provide sufficient flexibility to compensate thermal expansion and mechanical vibrations with the requested durability (life expectancy)
  • include sufficient squirm stability. (*) Exceptions are rubber expansion joints.

Expansion Joints with SS Bellows

Axial Expansion Joints

h-59
h-60

We offer a wide range of expansion joints, suitable for numerous specific applications. Our expansion joints portfolio basically consists of three main series:

  • Standard series: expansion joints up to DN 150 (6″)
  • Industrial series: expansion joints up to DN 1.000 (40″)
  • Special series: expansion joints >DN 1.000

The heart of all expansion joints is the metal bellows. Thanks to modern design and manufacturing facilities, all our expansion joints offer the following advantages:

  • High flexibility
  • Short build length
  • Large movement capacity
  • Durability and excellent chemical resistance

We use almost every type of bellows forming to offer the best possible solution to its customers: Hydraulic and elastomer forming, punching as well as mechanical rolling.

These expansion joints are designed to take up axial movements in a piping system. The advantage of axial expansion joints is the fact that they take up relatively little space and no directional changes in the piping are required. When installing axial expansion joints, proper fix points and guidance are required. Please consult our engineers for more information. We offer two ranges of axial expansion joints:

  • Standard series: (axial) expansion joints up to DN150 (6″)
  • Industrial series: expansion joints > DN150 (6″)

Depending on the required type, sizes in the industrial series go up to DN1.000 (40″). Besides our standard and industrial program, we also manufacture special expansion joints according to customers’ specifications. Diameters of several meters are no exception!

Lateral Expansion Joints

Angular Expansion Joints

h-61
h-62

lateral expansion joint works in the same way as a hinged expansion joint does. It utilizes the ability of a bellows to rotate in angular direction. The lateral movement capability is the result of the angular rotation of the bellows and their centre to centre distance. The longer the distance between the bellows, the larger is the movement. A longer centre to centre distance also results in lower displacement forces of the expansion joint. Lateral expansion joints are independent expansion systems in contrast to single hinged expansion joints. They are practically a two pin system. Lateral expansion joints are usually installed with a 50% pre-stressing. This is accomplished by pre-stressing the entire pipe system after the expansion joint is installed.

Angular expansion joints are used for large angular movement in one or two planes. Angular (or hinged) expansion joints are used for large pipe elongations. A system of expansion joints is made of standard elements. This requires two or three expansion joints. The application of angular expansion joints always requires a change in the direction of the piping. Therefore, they are preferably located where a 90° bend has originally been foreseen. The elongation absorption of hinged expansion joint systems is practically unlimited. It is determined by the allowable movement‘s angle of the hinged expansion joints and the length of the pipe section between two angular expansion joints.

Advantages:

  • almost unlimited elongation absorption
  • reduced load on anchor points
  • modular concept application
  • use of normal guides

Disadvantages:

  • change in pipe direction is always required
  • more space required as compared to axial expansion joints
  • two or three expansion joints required for a system

Taut-Leg Moorings

Insert Catanary Mooring

h-68
h-69

As water depth increases conventional, catenary systems become less and less economical. For permanent systems a costeffective, synthetic alternative has been developed: Taut Leg Mooring. In this system each line is strung out directly to the seabed typically at an angle of 45°. As the platform drifts horizontally with wind or current, the lines stretch and this sets up an opposing force. Our DeepRope® Polyester mooring lines have the right restoring characteristics and thus are the preferred choice for this application. Because of the angle at which the rope arrives at the seabed the anchor will be loaded vertically. Suction piles or special anchors, so-called VLAs (Vertically Loaded Anchors) have to be used.

For temporary systems either a polyester taut-leg or a catenary mooring with insert lines made of Dyneema® are a cost effective alternative for dynamically positioned rigs. The choice between these two alternatives is driven by cost of the mooring versus operational limitations. A DeepRope® insert made with Dyneema® will transfer mooring forces without changing the catenary. In shallow waters, an all chains system works well but as the water depth increases the weight of the chain becomes excessive and it tends to hang directly down from the rig. By inserting a line made of Dyneema® the mooring stiffness increases, without a weight penalty. Thus no modifications to the riser system are necessary when going to deeper water. Depending on the exact design it is even possible to improve the restoring characteristics. This will extend the weather window for drilling time. As the DeepRope® lines made of Dyneema® are neutrally buoyant they can be pre-installed with only a small surface buoy, thus reducing hook-up time. More information can be found in our OFFSHORE leaflet with focus on our DeepRope Mooring lines.

Offshore Single Point Mooring

h-70

Bexco is one of the few type approved and certified producers of Single Point Mooring Hawsers in the World. Offshore Lifting and Installation

h-72

BEXCO has been instrumental in completing heavy lift projects both offshore and onshore with its custom-made solutions, which are built to match the toughest environments and conditions where our customers operate. BEXCO offers various types of lifting and installation arrangements in Polyester, HMPE (Dyneema® or Spectra®) or LCP (Vectran®). Polyester: the excellent fatigue life of Polyester and its resistance to internal and external abrasion gives the rope a very good service life. HMPE (Dyneema® or Spectra®): with a same strength but a weight of 8 to 10 times lighter than wire ropes HMPE ropes are more flexible and much easier to handle; HMPE has a much better fatigue life and similar elastic elongation properties compared to wire. LCP (Vectran®): with a same strength but a weight of 8 to 10 times lighter than wire ropes Vectran® ropes are more flexible and much easier to handle; Vectran® has a much better fatigue life and similar elastic elongation properties compared to wire; the fibre also has an excellent temperature resistance with a melting point of 300°C. These materials can be produced in various constructions:

  • 8 or 12-strand
  • Ultraline®
  • Ultraspring: a spliceless round sling using one permanent three-strand core. This design allows short springs with high strength and easy handling. It has been designed for a longer life and flexibility.
  • Grommet

Round Slings: High Strength Round Slings in HMPE (Dyneema®), Aramid (Twaron® or Technora®) and composite of HMPE and Aramid, are used where light weight and high strength are needed in combination with a very accurate length tolerance (5mm). The load bearing fibres are kept parallel and laid into an endless loop, with no resultant strength losses due to twisting, braiding and termination of the fibres. They are encased in durable coated and laminated jackets made from Cordura®, with the option of using various heat and cut resistant fibres if required. This construction offers flexibility in design, whether the sling is used for general lifting, project specific lifting, sub sea installation (fluorescent jackets) or mooring.
